Tai Chi and Qigong for Juniors and Teens

Creating Community Through Martial Arts

At Nam Yang Epsom, we are always looking to support our students so that they feel stronger, healthier, and more confident.  So that we can help them achieve their goals, needs and desires we also offer regular classes on our Shuang Yang Tai Chi and Qigong courses to support them looking for relaxation, mindfulness and light exercise.

We understanding that there can be an immense amount of pressure during the times of exams with focus on success, all of which can feel very overwhelming, stressful and scary. Being prepared and stress-free can be key during this time but actually locating an outlet for relief can be difficult. Tai Chi and Qigong has been recently reported to be an excellent way to combat these nerves & anxiety and is now being taught in a few schools across the country.

With this in mind, we decided to build a special course for Juniors and Teens working through their GCSEs, SATS, A Levels, and other exams so that they can learn to control and combat their stress, anxiousness, and nerves as they get prepared for their exams.  We will help with gaining confidence, building relaxation, retaining focus and becoming stronger.

Shuang Yang Pei Ho Rou Rouan Chien

The Sun Frost White Crane Soft & Gentle Art

Most commonly referred to as the ‘Shuang Yang’, this is the internal form of the White Crane art. While very similar to Tai Chi, the routine itself follows the Buddhist Shaolin Tradition rather than the Toast tradition. It is a soft routine that trains your body to be elastic and supple, yet strong and grounded. Guiding the practicioner to focus on relaxation and use correct breath work. A meditation in motion.

The health benefits of the routine allow us to develope suppleness, mobility, calmness and balance in the body as well as boost our health, strength, concentration and energy. Typically performed in a meditative state, requiring the sinking of chi, calming of the mind, and breathing from the core of our body.

Make no mistake, though. This is a true Shaolin Kung Fu form.

The Shuang Yang is also a deadly Martial Art system with a full array of techniques teaching sweeps, Chi Na joint locks and striking vulnterable areas.  The form uses a low stance called the ‘Bow and Arrow stance’ to generate power from the hips, stretching the bodies tendons to become elastic and build more ‘Geng’, or what we know as ‘Springy Power’ – Internal Power.

Tong Ling Chi Kung

The Tong (Clearing) Ling (Effectiveness) Chi kung System

The practice of Chi Kung (Qigong) was incorporated into traditional Chinese medicine as exercises to prevent illnesses and diseases from attacking the body.  Today, there are more than three hundred styles of Chi Kung being taught. Here we teach the Tong Ling Chi Kung System as taught to us by Master Huang Qing Qiang from Gui Ling Quang Xi.  This is an easy and efficient system suitable for all levels and ages.  To have a better understanding of Chi Kung, we should first look at the words and understand what they mean.

The words ‘chi’ can be translated to energy, breath, air or gas. ‘Kung’ means the work of practice. Therefore, the simpliest understanding of ‘Chi Kung’ is to ‘Work’, or ‘cultivate’ our energy, or our breath, through continued practice. The word ‘tong’ means clearing, access, flowing and circulating. ‘Ling’ means effectiveness, swiftness and alertness.  The practice of Chi Kung can be divided into two types:

Type 1 – Movement. This type does breathing exercises through different movements

Type 2 – Meditation. This type is where you sit in a position, relax yourself and do the breathing.

In the Tong Ling, there are 11 basic excercises and the requirements are simple and easy to learn, no risk of deviations, etc. All of which can be done in a small place.

By practicing Chi Kung, we can work on protecting our health, lowering high blood pressure, anemia, overcome stress and nervousness, migrains, inflammation of nose and throat, asthma, and much more. Not only can we prevent a lot of illness from coming our way, but we can also use Chi Kung to balance our mind, body and spirit. When we are able to balance our own energy and calm our minds, we can think clearer, breathe better, and feel stronger and more prepared. These are all essential, especially in a difficult time of exams.

No, we will get you off to a very strong start.

No.

You will be training alongside other students at your own pace. You will not be quized or tested nor is it compulsory to try and remember everything. Most of the practice and training happens all together as a group so there is no pressure on having to remember everything from heart. We do encourage you to practice outside of class to truly gain the benefits of the art, though.

Don’t worry. We will help you and remind you. This is a time for you to practice and to learn the skills you need to relax, breathe, and become a better you. You have succeeded by simply attending. 🙂

As general practice due to COVID, we ask that parents do not stay for the duration of the lessons to help keep numbers low and also due to space. Since we started this rule, it turned out that children worked harder, stayed more focused and learned better without parents watching.
